Minor in Geographic Information Science

1. Credit hours required: The GISc minor consists of 20 qtr hrs of coursework.

2. Required courses:

GEOG 2000 Geographic Statistics
GEOG 2010 Map Reading Use and Analysis
GEOG 2020 Computer Cartography
GEOG 2100 Intro to Geographic Information Systems
GEOG 3040 Global Positioning Systems
GEOG 3200 Remote Sensing

Students who have completed the above courses or their equivalent for other degree programs may elect to take more advanced courses from the list below to satisfy the required 20 qtr hrs:

GEOG 3010 Geographic Information and Analysis
GEOG 3110 GIS Modeling
GEOG 3130 Advanced GIS
GEOG 3140 Database Design
GEOG 3150 Project Design and Management
GEOG 3860 GIS Application in Natural Resources
GEOG 4100 Application Design and Production

Note: As geography majors may emphasize GISc as part of their degree program, they
are not eligible to complete the minor in GISc.

3. Pre-requisites: Students are expected to have completed the MATC requirement or equivalent prior to enrolling in GEOG 2000. Completion of an introductory course in geography such as SOCS 1410: People, Places, Landscapes, NATS 1201-1203: Environmental Systems, or NATS 1216-1218: Our Dynamic Earth is encouraged but not required.

4. Academic structure: Students should complete GEOG 2010: Map Reading Use and Analysis, GEOG 3040 Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and GEOG 2020 Cartography prior to completing the remaining courses for the minor.
