Research Interests:
My research interests include transportation, urban, and economic geography; airline industry and policy; airport planning; urban, metropolitan, and statewide transportation planning; intermodal transportation; transportation, land use, and urban growth; globalization; and sustainable transportation. I have co-authored two books on air transportation topics, Denver International Airport: Lessons Learned (McGraw Hill, 1997) and Airline Deregulation and Laissez-Faire Mythology (Quorum Books, 1992). I have also conducted major research projects as part of the National Center for Intermodal Transportation (www.ie.msstate.edu/ncit/) including assessment of transportation planning processes at metropolitan planning organizations, intermodal transportation planning at state departments of transportation, and intermodal passenger transportation systems and planning. I was the lead author for the Transportation Geography chapter in Geography in America at the Dawn of the 21st Century (Oxford University Press, 2004). Together with Tim Vowles (University of Victoria, Wellington, NZ), I have been examining so-called "pockets of pain" in the U.S. airline system, or those places burdened with consistently high fares and poorer service levels. I have also worked on research with Brian Graham (University of Ulster) on globalization and sustainability in international air transportation, and we will be contributing a chapter on air transportation in the forthcoming book Transport Geographies.
